Digital Marketing for Woodworkers and Makers

Introduction

I love what I do for a living! Being the first generation to grow up with a computer in the household has definitely shaped my professional career. In my teens, I was building websites, at the start of University, I became a coder, then went back towards my creative side to become a graphic designer. As the internet grew, my skillset matured and I moved into Digital Marketing; running campaigns and strategy for some of the largest brands in the world.

Outside of the house, I was regularly found milling about in my grandfather or father\’s workshops. They were carpenters, builders, mechanics, or using the parlance of our time now, they were makers. Those tool based skills became a part of me over time, how could they not?!

You can make the greatest table that ever was, but if no one can ever find it, see it or attribute it to you and your brand, what\’s the point? My desire for this is to be able to provide a great community with help and support that many won\’t be accustomed to. These are the skills I have outside of the workshop and I overly keen to share them with you.

People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” - Simon Sinek

My Digital Marketing Background

I often joke that I have been doing search longer than Google. This is partially true, didn\’t offer Paid Search (PPC) until 2004, I started doing it in 2002. My Dad brought home our first desktop computer in 1987, I’ve been a ‘Digital Native’. I started Uni in computer programming, but switched to Graphic Design and Website Design. I then graduated with a degree in Multimedia Marketing and Film Production.

Over the years, I’ve plied these skills with record labels in LA, eCommerce companies in America and the UK. Worked in two of the three largest media agencies in the world. Over a nearly twenty-year career, I’ve done search ads for Adidas and Disney. Grown social media presence for the likes of Honda and Burger King. Have driven digital growth for Budweiser, Corona and Stella Artois. I’ve helped business like Travis Perkins grown their eCommerce business 10-fold while helping Expedia stand out in the search engines.

Brand Identity
Playing My Part, Helping Your Brand

My first love has always been graphic design. I’ve spent so much time and hard drive space making logos for bands, companies, t-shirts and everything in between that I’ve lost track of them all. Brand identity is so important, especially for an individual or company starting out. The importance of having an strong brand that stands you out and says ‘THIS IS ME!, COME AND GET IT!’ is massive.

The colours, the shapes, the non-verbal feeling that gets portrayed is a big part of people trusting you as it is a direct representation of your skill set. A shitty or mundane logo portrays that I’m as committed as Googling a generic logo maker, but not bothered beyond that. No offense to a lot of you, but I swear, every time I come across a new account with a black and white logo with a saw blade or set of trees, I just want to do my best Gordon Ramsey impression and say ‘Fuck me’. You’re better than that. You’re work is DEFINITELY better than that. Don’t let a lack of design understanding stop you and your incredible woodworking skills from getting to the next level.

In To Give My All

Did I make the Nike swoosh? No. Did I do that rebrand for McDonald’s? Yeah right. I’m not the greatest graphic designer there is. Hell, I haven’t been a ‘professional’ graphic designer for more than a decade. Yet, in that decade, I’ve had Photoshop constantly running and being used for any instance I could or wanted to. I’ve kept my graphic skills as sharp as a 6000-grit whetstone.

Wow, that was long winded. So, what’s my point? I am here to help and more importantly, I WANT to help you. This community has given me a lot in a very short time. I want to give what I can. And while one of my tablet stands are nice, it’s not going to set your world on fire. Maybe, just maybe, some of my ‘professional’ skills can. And that’s why I’ve set out to do this. Put my skills and abilities out there for those who are willing to raise their hand and ask.
